Shark & Ray Fishing in the Med
“Shameful” shark protection delay |
Monday, 13 February 2012 12:02 |
THE marine conservation organisation, Oceana, has hit out at the EU for its failure to offer greater protection to sharks and rays in the Mediterranean.
The announcement follows in the wake of the biennial meeting of the Barcelona Convention in Paris. The strict protection of ten species of sharks and rays, for which non-EU nations had already indicated their support, hinged on the vote of the EU. Despite already postponing the decision at two previous meetings, they requested a further delay, invoking a clause of the convention allowing them six more months to decide which species, if any, they are in favour of protecting.
“As the largest shark-fishing power in the world, the EU should be leading the way for the conservation of sharks and rays that are threatened by overfishing. Instead, while countries such as Algeria, Libya, and Morocco came to the table prepared to protect these species, the EU arrived without an agreed position, delaying this critical decision yet again,” stated Xavier Pastor, Executive Director of Oceana Europe. “After months of delay while the European Commission attempted to resolve ‘internal’ issues, any further postponement of the decision is simply shameful. Meanwhile, threatened sharks and rays – including four species considered to be Critically Endangered – continue to be fished in the Mediterranean.”........................................................................................................................................ |

Holiday Fishing -- Bait Problems ??
Holiday
Fishing
One
of the biggest problems when fishing on holiday is what bait to use, many of us
opt for lures of one form or another mainly because of the grief we would get
from the other half if she found the slightest niff of bait in the hotel room
or apartment especially when visiting warmer climes.
My
personal preference for bait is the humble squid or calamari, but the problem
then is that in a warm climate two hours after purchase your prime bait is
reeking and turning you into billy no-mates in your chosen resort, not to
mention its effectiveness as a fishing bait has been drastically diminished.
The
Solution
First
head to your nearest supermarket and purchase a plastic sandwich box and a bag
of fine sea salt, here in Spain
this would cost you in the region of 2.50 Euros.
Next
go purchase a couple of small squid from the wet fish counter, take to the
waters edge and clean, removing all the guts and discard, shake surplus moisture
off, place a thin layer of salt in the bottom of the box and place the squid in
and cover with salt.
This
results in the squid becoming a little tougher, better for the hook, but the big
advantage is it will keep for two weeks so you have bait at all times. And just
for the extra brownie points the box can be kept for the duration of the
holiday on your room balcony without complaints from she who will give you
permission to go fishing in the first place.
