UK search and rescue service to be fully privatised

BRITAIN is to have a new fleet of faster and more modern search and rescue helicopters, the Government has announced. The new service will see search and rescue operations provided by contracted civilian crews and the Government has today started the procurement process for a contract lasting around ten years. Under existing arrangements, search and rescue is provided jointly by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) - operating a fleet of Sea King helicopters from eight military bases, with a further four civilian bases operated under contract to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The new arrangements will see the end of military involvement in a dedicated helicopter search and rescue service. This will allow the Armed Forces to focus their activity on front-line operations and enable the MoD to meet its previously announced intention to retire its fleet of Sea Kings by March 2016. Shipping Minister Mike Penning said: "Every day around the UK, people undertake a range of activities where knowing there's a reliable search and rescue service if something goes wrong is absolutely vital. "The current arrangements have served us well for decades, and we are grateful to the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for their great dedication in helping deliver an exemplary search and rescue service over the years. But we cannot ignore the fact that, after their sterling service to our country, the Sea Kings are nearing the end of their life and it is time to look to the future. “Commercial operations are nothing new in this area - the MCA's search and rescue functions have been provided on a contract basis for almost thirty years - and this system has served us well. This new, long-term contract will see the UK served by some of the most modern, well-equipped helicopters in the world." Under the plans published today, search and rescue operations at RAF Boulmer would end in 2015 and at Portland when the MCA contract expires during 2017 .The winning bidder will be then be expected to operate from ten locations around the UK, but provide at least the same level of service as at present. Today's announcement follows the cancellation of a previous search and rescue helicopter procurement in February this year. Under these former proposals, search and rescue would have been provided by a commercial operator through a Private Finance Initiative using a combination of military and civilian crews. The project was cancelled following the discovery of irregularities in the bidding process. The Government expects to award this new contract in early 2013 to give the future service provider time to mobilise the new capability. .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Blue Lobster

I know I would have released it What would you have done with it...

While dark blue is the typical color for the European lobster (while alive), an electric blue lobster, on the other hand, is a bit of a rarity. Found by Rex Goldsmith at the Billingsgate Fish Market in London, this lobster was "too nice to put in a pot and boil", according to Goldsmith. Instead, he contacted crustacean scientist, Paul Clark, at the Natural History Museum. Clark confirmed the the lobster is common (European) in species, but its color is being seen as a rare genetic variant. The specimen was sent to and will remain at the London Aquarium. After it has completed its quarantine, the lobster is set to stay on display in the aquarium, hopefully for years to come. So, for all of you lobster-lovers in London--you're probably going to want to check this exhibit out.

I really can´t believe some people, they come to the boat when we are tied up in dock and ask to go Tuna fishing when I point out that fishing for Blue Fin is banned in order that the species may be given an opportunity to come back from the brink of extinction they just look puzzled and say ye but when can we go.With stupid idiots like that wandering about calling themselves anglers not much wonder the seas of the world are in the state they are,I was tempted to push him into the water and place my foot on his head but that would only add to the pollution problems around here................. sorry I´m ranting goodnight all

Start of a new season

Finally kicked off the new season nothing by way of outstanding size but I think good fun had by all

`Barbados´in drydock

Yes lifted into drydock for a new paint job ready for new season back in the water at the end of this week and ready for action from the 16th of this month

Well into dry-dock in the morning there for a week and when she comes out Barbados will look as fresh as a daisy in her new coat of paint, just in time for our season start on the 14th of April

More work

More work on boat today,finished converting second cabin into a rod and tackle storage area,engineer coming in the morning to give motors the once over before season starts.
